Newfoundland and Labrador Music Workshop Series
…with Christina Smith
TWO new online learning opportunities for tune-players this fall!
Newfoundland Tunes (for all traditional melody instruments)
This class will focus on the Newfoundland dance-music repertoire - favourite singles and doubles, waltzes and maybe a triple or two, from Belle Fennelly, Frank Maher, and other beloved “fiddlers.” Open to any melody instrument - bring your mandolin, your whistle, flute, fiddle, accordion - as long as you can play it in D! Guitarists - please know that we won’t be working on the chords so this is probably not the best class for you unless you can pick tunes.
Advanced Fiddle
This Fall we’ll learn some rocking fiddle tunes! We’ll start with a simple version of the tune and then add ornaments and bow techniques to jazz it up. Every class we’ll have a 15-minute “technique corner” to help you get better sound, improve your tuning, play faster - any technique that participants would like to work on. There’ll be tunes from the Newfoundland greats - Emile Benoit, Rufus Guinchard and others!
Dates: Eight Tuesday evenings, October 6th through November 24th 2026
Times: Advanced Fiddle at 7:15 NT, and NL Tunes at 8:30 NT
Platform: Zoom. Sheet music and practice-audio files will be sent to you via email, as well as video-recordings for the classes in case you have to be absent.
Cost: $120 per series, or $200 for both. Reduced fees available for low-income participants.
