The Soundbone Traditional Arts Foundation …

…is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the traditional music, dance, and storytelling arts of Newfoundland and Labrador. It grew out of the Vinland Music Camp, a traditional music and dance workshop founded by Eric West in 2001. Soundbone was incorporated as a non-profit in April 2009.

Soundbone’s staff instructors are among the most qualified in the province. Collectively know as Lomond Sound, the groups has performed at festivals throughout the province as well as given school and community workshops.

Mission Statement

The Soundbone Traditional Arts Foundation will preserve and promote the musical, dance, and storytelling traditions of Newfoundland and Labrador, and through its activities help make these traditions relevant to today. The Foundation will provide performance opportunities and instruction for all ages with events such as workshops, community choirs, and camps.

Activities

Soundbone organizes various music, storytelling and dance projects throughout Newfoundland and Labrador including: Vinland Music Camp, Community Choirs, Arts for All, School Touring Program and Musical Map of Newfoundland and Labrador.  

Objectives

  • Preserve the traditional music, dance and storytelling arts of Newfoundland and Labrador.

  • Promote interest in our traditional arts through workshops, retreats, concerts and recordings.

  • Make our events safe, appealing and accessible to all at a reasonable cost.

  • Encourage creativity and innovation in our traditional art forms.

  • Respect the diverse interests and cultural backgrounds of participants at our workshops.

  • Share our knowledge with other folk artists, educators, arts organizations and the media.
