      <image:title>Soundbone Folksong Choir - Directors - Jean Hewson - Director</image:title>
<image:caption>Jean Hewson believes that a community’s soul can be revealed, in part, through its folksongs. They provide a glimpse into tragedies and triumphs of the past, diversions and entertainments of the present, and visions and dreams of the future. For more than 40 years, Jean has collected, arranged and performed the folk music of Newfoundland and Labrador, and is grateful for the many opportunities the music has given her. She has had the good fortune to play and tour with some of the province’s best-known traditional musicians, and has spent most of her life teaching, and working with organizations focused on music education and the passing on of the tradition. Soundbone Folksong Choir is an extension of her work with the Vinland Music Camp: a unique annual camp devoted to the traditional arts of Newfoundland and Labrador. Her hope is that the choir will feel like a gathering of old friends gathered around a campfire, enjoying good company, laughter, and some great music.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Soundbone Folksong Choir - Directors - Madison Mouland - Assistant</image:title>
<image:caption>Madison is a folk musician from Musgrave Harbour, Notre Dame Bay, presently completing her fourth year as a voice major at the Memorial University School of Music. Although she studies and performs classical music at school, Madison is a folk musician at heart and typically performs traditional music from the ages. Madison has been singing and playing guitar for many years, and has been involved with Soundbone’s Cultural Ambassador Program, performing for seniors, doing workshops with children and performing at other various venues. In her spare time, she also loves to paint and make crafts. She hopes to become a school music teacher in the future, sharing her love of music with children.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Shay Black - Shay Black</image:title>
<image:caption>Shay Black is an avid songcatcher, musician and singer and is known for his extensive knowledge of songs and music from the Irish, English, Scottish, and North American traditions. Born in Dublin, Ireland, he moved in 1994 to Berkeley, CA from Liverpool, where he had lived for the previous twenty years. While in Liverpool, he toured and recorded with Irish band Garva, the celebrated Stan Hugill and fabled sea shanty singers Stormalong John. Shay is the eldest member of Ireland’s Black Family, who are “regarded as one of the most impressive groups of Irish singers to be found anywhere” according to a review in The Irish Echo. As a close-knit family group, which includes his brothers Michael and Martin and sisters Frances and Mary Black, they possess a bond which never fails to translate into their onstage intertwining of voices, which has been described as exquisite, exhilarating, and nothing short of thrilling. Shay teaches Folk Repertoire at Berkeley’s Freight and Salvage music venue, now held weekly and world-wide on Zoom, and his most regular pre-COVID local gig was the weekly Starry Irish Music Session at the Starry Plough pub in Berkeley every Sunday. He tours regularly in the US and Europe with Michael as The Black Brothers, also with Martin, Frances and Mary Black as The Black Family. Apart from family gigs, Shay performs individually, and with a myriad of musicians and singers in the bay area, including Nauticus and Dogwatch, both sea music bands, and De Dannyboyz, an occasional group that plays weddings, sessions, parties, and wakes. Shay has recorded and performed with the California Revels, Shira Kammen, Peter Kasin and Richard Adrianovich, Dogwatch, Sharon Knight, In Harmony’s Way and other groups and singers. With Celia Ramsay he released a “Singer’s Request”, and in 2020 he and Michael released the CD “Glackanacker”. When Shay performs, his music creates a sheer celebration of singing which he generously shares with his audience. The material is quintessentially Irish, ranging from traditional to humorous to new songs. Shay will always welcome audience participation, and his infectious humor, wit, and unalloyed joy in singing make it difficult for anyone to remain a spectator for long!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Sally Goddard - Sally Goddard</image:title>
<image:caption>Sally was born in London, England and grew up there during the 60s folk revival. She got her first guitar at age 14, and performed in London folk clubs before heading to Bangor, North Wales to study marine biology. While at university, her love of, and exposure to, traditional music grew – so many great singers visited the University Folk Club (e.g. Peter Bellamy, Steeleye Span), and a steady stream of amazing singers and musicians passed through Bangor from Ireland on their way to England. In 1987, Sally moved to Newfoundland with her family, and quickly found Bridgett's Folk Club and a new world of tunes and songs to learn, and wonderful musicians to play with. In addition to performing solo - she sings a cappella, or accompanies herself on the guitar - Sally has played in a variety of bands. Finding new songs, learning and performing those songs, alone, with friends at home, in folk clubs, at house concerts, and folk festivals has been an abiding passion and a source of great joy. Since 1987, her day jobs have all focused on marine biology, and for the last 16 years she has been a lecturer in biology at MUN. Sally retired in May, which means much more time for MUSIC!!</image:caption>

Paul Wilson trained at music college and after excursions into the worlds of classical, jazz, pop, medieval and new music, he started his career in folk music. He is a singer, music arranger and songwriter. Paul is co-founder of Wren Music with Marilyn Tucker with whom he also sings as a duo, playing piano accordion and guitar. Paul facilitates Wren's music sessions on a variety of instruments. He researches songs and music and arranges music for many groups, especially the choirs. Paul also supervises the younger team members. Paul is involved with MenSing, Wren's men's singing group, Get Rhythmical, a Torbay based group for looked after children, and the Fiddle Orchestra Of Devon, supporting leader Hannah Cumming. Paul's leisure activities include cycling, reading, cooking and gardening. <image:title>SFC - Director - Jean Hewson - Director</image:title>

      <image:title>VMC Youth Scholarship</image:title>
<image:caption>Soundbone Traditional Arts Foundation has recently established the Alex Hodder Memorial Scholarship for Youth. This scholarship aims to honour the life of Alex Hodder by supporting a young person (aged 13 to 18) who is passionate about traditional music and arts to attend Vinland Music Camp. Alex was a wonderful budding musician who specialized in songwriting with guitar and voice. He loved Vinland Music Camp and his family wishes to honour his memory with one full scholarship to Camp. The successful candidate will receive a full scholarship to Vinland Music Camp to be held at Lion Max Simms Memorial Camp near Bishop’s Falls from August 17th to 22nd, 2025. This includes tuition, onsite room and board, and instrument rental (if needed). If the selected candidate is unable to attend, the scholarship will be offered to another candidate, or held over for another year.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Evelyn Osborne Bio</image:title>
<image:caption>Evelyn Osborne loves nothing better than throwing back the rugs to play for dancers! Whether in her home province of Newfoundland and Labrador (NL), Canada or across the globe in Hong Kong spreading the music of NL is her passion. Evelyn feels that keeping the connection between music and dance alive is vital to the human experience of music. Evelyn has performed and taught fiddle and dance workshops throughout Canada, in Europe, Asia, and Australia. Her repertoire focuses on Newfoundland dance music and in particular what she learned from working with over 100 tradition-bearers in her 15 years of research. Evelyn believes that music is part of our creative human experience. She takes every opportunity to work with artists across genres. This often leads to improvisational collaborations such as composing improvised and responsive music on the spot for storytellers, belly dancers, silent films, VJs, magicians/clowns and more globally. Playing music with and for others is one of the great joys in life. From chamber music to Baroque or modern ensembles, to dinner theatre, to all sorts of popular music bands, and various non-traditional/cross-genre ensembles, Evelyn loves to play and create together.</image:caption>
